Traders Laboratory Forex Trading Contest!

Recommended Posts

My DD exceeded 20% so I am resigning the contest. Shame really, because since I closed the positions, one has resumed the direction I traded initially.

However - that's the way of it.

Look forward to spotting the eventual winner - good luck to all.

I still hold gold in my live trading. I didn't trade it in the contest.

Ingot, you are still in. Although your total loss exceeds 20%, you were never over 20% at any one time.

OK Ingot

You can still win

I am going to help you using the moon. Your method will take too long.

Sell the Euro v US$ for a target 1.26.

Take a small real position and take the maximum for this contest

Bob - last time I took your advice, I ended up mauled by man-eating Kangaroos while playing night-golf in the light of the full moon!

Do you deserve another chance?

Can you be trusted as my private financial advisor?

Since it took 5 super-traders to beat me last time, I figure I need all the assistance I can get. Don't you have something better than the EURUSD?

Had I not attempted to avoid the 20% DD from the GBPNZD which put me nearly 20% ahead, I would been leading by quite an obscene margin

The GBPNZD has since come thundering back in the original direction, and all I have is tears! :crap::doh::crap::doh:

But I did make a few shekels on it in my live trading, after ditching gold, so all is not lost.

I will drop in another trade shortly to try to at least save face :roll eyes:

But as far as your advice goes ... I will need to analyse that!

Hi Ingot

OK. I understand. You think I'm a lunatic :(

I withdraw my offer of help. Too late. :roll eyes:

I will be watching your position on the log very carefully :haha:

bobc

Too late ... far too late mate.

I have gone short the EURUSD, despite my inner self ... my HIGHER self ... screaming ... "nooooo!"

I will send you an account for the damage!

And I will take the pledge!

I wonder if this thread gets the "Hot Topic" feature on the newsletter whether there might be lots of others willing to enter the contest?

it would be real nice if we had at least 20-30 traders in the contest

So... are their prizes this time around? Because man... every time the first rolls around, I'm too preoccupied with all sorts of psych nonsense, and I don't even take a look at this thread for 2 weeks.

Then, about 3/4 of the month in, I click the thread, see the leaderboard, and kick myself for not entering.

That's ok. I'll just faux enter. psudo compete. "play pretend" and think of how cool I am for winning (or being ahead) in something I'm not even involved it. It's just gonna be a way for me to live vicariously through myself.

Too bad though for me though...because my pretend competing is doing pretty well this month:

:::shrug:::

oh well. another month, another train leaves the station of milk and honey...with the next stop, fantasyland.

Well, that's just the thing Ingot... it's that not that I forget exactly...it's that I psych myself out near the end of the month it seems, and therefore elect to skip the competition.

Of course, that whole "psyched out" feeling goes away usually after the first week of the next month... and then I regret not signing up. So I think i'm not gonna talk about it anymore. I'm either going to do it, or I won't... but I'm tired of publically airing my own psych challenges, lol.

Btw.... do u have the signup link Ingot?

Just get registered and make the decision to trade or not later on. You at least have the opportunity to play or not then.

You have to short before full moon. :roll eyes:

Just after full moon the market will strengthen and thats next month, .....new contest.

Something else to remember. If the market holds its strength NOW, during the red period (new moon), it will make a nice move up after the 29th.

No more secrets. ;)

I think he was referring to specific steps to register for the contest. These steps should be such that if everyone follows them, they will be fully registered for the contest. I have not seen one post that was clear about exactly where to sign up. It should be one link for the contest, and on that webpage, a button that says 'register'. I do not see this unfortunately.

I've never seen a contest so difficult to sign up for.

Hi 4EverMaAT

I agree it can be a bit of an adventure negotiating

all the links, so I'll try to set out the steps. Those

who have already nutted it out have probably

forgotten the number of choices to be made to get

there.

* Go to OANDA - Forex Trading and Exchange Rates Services | OANDA

*Click on the link “Forex Trading” which takes

you to the link that applies to your zone.

* Click on the GREEN link that says: “Register for fxTrade”

* That takes you to a sign-up page – EVERYONE

has to sign up – demo or not, so you need to

complete these details.

* Note that the “PRODUCT” in the first line

has to be changed to “Free Demo Account”

* The rest is straight forward – most people

choose “US Dollar (USD)" as their account

currency – it makes little difference to the %

profit/loss results for your account.

* Once details are completed, click on the

link: “START REGISTRATION”

* IMPORTANT: Write down the Username and

Password you used when registering – it is

quite a tedious step to find them later if you

forget either of them.

* You will then be taken to the confirmation page.

* NOTE Make sure you go to your email box and

click on the confirmation link. You can go

direct to the “Sign in to fxTrade Practice”

from there, or follow the links below.

* I bookmarked my sign-in page for speedy access.

* You have now established your account. NEXT

step is to log in to it, and find out the ACCOUNT

NUMBER Write it down too, next to your Username/PW

Oanda calls this your “Primary” Account number.

* Go back to OANDA - Forex Trading and Exchange Rates Services | OANDA and “SIGN IN”

* Make sure you choose: “fxTrade Practice” and not:

“fxTrade” or it will refuse to recognise your details.

* You then need to make a cup of coffee while

Oanda opens up the trading platform! It takes

about 60 seconds at times.

* Note that if you close the little pre-charts box,

the trading platform will not open. If you find

it is in the way, shrink it down out of the way -

it still functions from there.

* Your account number is displayed at the very

top of the browser. Eg “fxTrade Practice – Ingot54 – Primary (1909**)”

That takes you through the set-up phase.

If anyone can add or clarify things further, feel free to suggest.

In posting this, I went through the setting up of a brand new account under a new user-name and password, so it should work for you.

In the next post, I will show how to register for the contest.

Next step to join the contest.

You might find the info on this page useful – in any case, the links are here:

Forex Trading Contest | OANDA fxTrade

Choose the link: “See Current Contests”

https://fx2.oanda.com/mod_perl/fxcontest/fxcontest.pl?rm=listContests

For our purposes, we need to find the current contest. There are only a couple of pages of these, so we will be looking for the “October 2012 Traderslaboratory” link.

It's on page 2. You would usually see a link “Join this contest” if membership is open.

As entries for the current contest have closed, you will need to wait until the new one is set up.

But you are in luck – Mystic Forex has already set up the new one, and it is called

“Novenber Traderslaboratory Forex Trading Contest” and the joining link is displayed on the right hand side under “Contest Dates.” (Small typo there in spelling “November” as “Novenber” - sets ours apart form the cheaper contests :) )

Once you click on the “Join this contest” link, you will be taken to the sign-up page.

Make sure you WRITE DOWN the details you enter there – because if you forget what user-name you nominate for the game, you will have trouble getting your trades entered in the contest, possibly. I chose the uncomplicated route of using the same user-name everywhere.

That's about it.

I realise it may seem simple to myself, but for first time users, there are always uncertainties.

Please have a go ... and ask questions – will be glad to help.

just want to remind a small detail, you can create a subaccount which you can enable mt4:

Thanks for that info Obsidian !

You can now sign up for the November Contest.

I guess November will be a 1 month contest. For Dec we will try a 2 month. December and January. This will also compensate for the holidays a bit.

    • Date: 7th June 2024. ECB closer look: All options open for the second half of the year! ECB officials continue to dampen rate cut speculation, following on from Lagarde’s hawkish comments yesterday. Officials have been out in force this morning to continue stressing that the inflation outlook remains uncertain and that the central bank is not committing to a particular rate path for the rest of the year. The ECB cut rates by 25 basis points, but as we expected it was a “hawkish” cut that left all options open for the second half of the year. Lagarde repeatedly stressed that future decisions will be data dependent, and even refused to confirm that yesterday’s move was the first step of an easing cycle. Rate cuts in September and December are still a possibility, but not cast in stone. Simkus admitted that there may be more than one rate cut this year, but on the whole, the comments were designed to keep a lid on speculation that the central bank kicked off a rate cut cycle yesterday. Austria’s central bank head Holzmann went on record yesterday to confirm that he was the sole dissenter objecting to a cut yesterday, and so far the doves have been quiet, which is helping to affirm Lagarde’s hawkish message yesterday.   Details of the Rate Cut The ECB delivered the first rate cut in five years and lowered key rates by 25 basis points. The deposit rate is now at 3.75% and the main refinancing rate at 4.25%. It was a “hawkish cut,” as near term inflation forecasts were revised higher, and Lagarde flagged that domestic inflation remains high. The statement stressed that the ECB is not pre-committing to a particular rate path, and the comments leave all options on the table for the second half of the year.   Economic Activity and Forecasts  The ECB noted the improvement in economic activity through the first quarter of the year. Lagarde also highlighted that manufacturing is showing signs of stabilization, with stronger exports expected to support growth in coming quarters. At the same time, monetary policy should be less of a drag on demand over time, according to the ECB. The new set of forecasts show GDP rising 0.9% this year, which is more than the 0.6% expected back in March. The forecast for 2025 has been revised slightly down to 1.4% from 1.5% previously, and the ECB still expects a slight acceleration to 1.6% for 2026. The inflation forecast for this year was raised to 2.5% from 2.3%, and the projection for 2025 was hiked to 2.2% from 2.0%. As such, inflation will fall toward the target later than previously anticipated, though the forecast for 2026 was left unchanged at 1.9%. This means the headline rate is still expected to fall below the target at the end of the forecast horizon.   Upside Risks to Inflation The statement noted upside risks to the inflation outlook from wages and profits, which could be higher than currently anticipated. Geopolitical tensions and extreme weather events could also push up prices once again, according to the ECB. At the same time, the ECB acknowledged that inflation could come in lower than anticipated if monetary restrictions have more of a dampening effect than currently anticipated, or if global growth weakens more than projected.   The press conference was mainly dedicated to driving home the point that future decisions will depend on data available at the time of the respective meeting. Lagarde even refused to confirm that the central bank has effectively kicked off an easing cycle, and said in response to a question that she wouldn’t necessarily say that the ECB started a “dialing-back process”. She suggested it is likely, but refused to confirm it, which in theory means rates could actually go up again. This seems unlikely, given that this move was a near unanimous decision, but its makes clear that the ECB will not cut rates at every meeting and that the outlook for the rest of the year is still very much open. The ECB still thinks that monetary policy needs to remain restrictive for the foreseeable future against the backdrop of high domestic inflation. However, as chief economist Lane suggested recently, officials will have to debate at every meeting whether the data allows the central bank to dial back the degree of restrictiveness.   Employment and Inflation Dynamics Wage growth, profits, and services price inflation will remain the key numbers to watch through the rest of the year. Lagarde pointed to data on the compensation of employees, due to be released tomorrow, but also flagged that current wage agreements are often still backward looking, as they reflect attempts to compensate for the sharp rise in prices since the start of the Ukraine war. As we flagged previously, the multi-year wage agreements in Germany are a prime example of that. However, as Lagarde highlighted, the deals on the table so far show sharp increases for this year, but also imply a slowdown in wage growth in coming years. However, unemployment is at a record low and the number of vacancies has dropped only slightly. At the same time, service price inflation remains stubbornly high, which suggests that companies have sufficient room to pass on higher labor costs. With real disposable income rising, thanks to lower inflation and higher wages, companies could find it even easier to hike prices in the second half of the year, and yesterday’s rate cut is also likely to boost demand. In the current situation, this could add to domestic price pressures. Looking ahead, the only thing that is clear is that Lagarde did her best to keep expectations of back-to-back cuts under control. The chances still are that the ECB will deliver two more 25 basis point cuts in September and December, but at this point, nothing is cast in stone. Always trade with strict risk management.
