Who decides the price of Bitcoin?

Recommended Posts

I am new to the world of bitcoins and cryptocurrency and this question hit my mind recently.

Bitcoins are gaining popularity at a faster pace but will anybody make it clear to me that who decides the price of these bitcoins?

Hazel,

It’s the same with crytos as with any market - the next price change is determined by the most motivated participant(s).  When motivated buyer(s) take the ask, price up ticks and the ask is moved higher.  When motivated seller(s) accept the bid, price down ticks and the bid is moved lower.   Whether in slow increments or sudden crescendos, that how all prices move / are “decided”.

thanks for explanation. It makes a lot of sense.

will bitcoin can experience any bankruptcy ?

If so, how it can happen and how it can affect investors ?

BTC itself could 'experience' a 'bankruptcy'... either suddenly or gradually

Suddenly could come by blockchain suddenly being digitally totally and completely corrupted beyond recovery. Not possible?  Some things to consider :  hackers esp those state 'sponsored' (think nsa, etc) can infect any and all connected devices at will and at once...  and 'norton' wouldn't help you one bit... more likely they would be complicit...

Gradually could come as the economics of the model gradually sink in... blockchain transactions are viciously expensive and slow, the whole process of 'mining' is an energy heavy lottery, etc etc.,  plus BTC can now be tracked and taxed, etc, etc... ie the initial features and benefits of BTC get gradually chipped away

Either suddenly or gradually could come with grid down, etc etc... countless hodlers don't even have their certificates on hard copy...

still - BTC is a good 'trade' vehicle ... esp now that there are instruments amenable to shorting it...  esp if you like high price variability (more commonly and incorrectly known as volatility)

The only 'investors'  in BTC are miners.  All other participants are 'traders'.  BTC selling below mining costs and 'investors' are  gone.  BTC selling significantly below where individual traders bought and they abandon the trade and the instrument...

have a great day,

capt obvious

Markets shouldn't be selling off on the ETF news overnight because we told it would be pushed back to the end of September a few weeks ago

I have a theory. The long term whales are selling to destroy the media price manipulation. I think the Bloomberg crypto team take personal positions then try and move the market in their favour through their tweets. Whales have caught on an are destroying their trades. Bloomberg crypto tweet in clumps and often post the same tweet again a few days later.

Exchange, supply and demand on them and of course arbitrage between exchanges and starting from recently derivative instruments like CFDs on bitmex

No individual owns the technology behind email. Bitcoin would be controlled by all Bitcoin users across the globe. While developers would be improving the software, they couldn't force a change in the Bitcoin protocol because all users would be free for choosing what software as well as the version they would be utilizing.

I guess its how much traders want it and use it, the thing with bitcoin (correct me if im wrong) but its supply is limited thats why it just keeps on going up, and in some cases simply used to pump and dump by whales

The movement of the bitcoin is similar to the other currency pairs or commodities however since the bitcoin is in fancy it may take some time to compete with the currencies/commodities.

Yeah I also noticed that's its correlation with other major asset clases is lower so we can use it as a hedge.

      Hi,
We are doing a university job where we must investigate how banks manage their financial products that require trading, for example, they offer a fund, as they manage capital internally. Could you help me?
      Thank you!

    • Date: 19th March 2024. Market Recap – It’s a classic ‘Buy the rumour, sell the fact.   Economic Indicators & Central Banks: The advent of Wednesday’s FOMC decision and the further slippage in Fed rate cut expectations extended selling pressures on Treasuries.   Corporate issuance and the risk-on trades into equities weighed too. BoJ delivers dovish hike: The BoJ ended its yield curve control, ETF buying and the 8 years of negative interest rates and ushered in the nation’s first policy tightening since 2007. Also the bank pledged to continue to buy long-term government bonds. There was little indication of additional hikes, which signalled that this is not the first step of a rapid tightening cycle. RBA drops tightening bias, as it keeps the policy rate at a 12-year-high. The RBA held the cash rate at 4.35% for another meeting, but removed any reference to possible further hikes from the statement. When asked if the RBA had indeed moved to a neutral stance, Bullock said the risks to the outlook are indeed “finely balanced now”. Today: The FOMC meets for 2 days, and will issue its post-meeting statement at 18:00 GMT on Wednesday. Expectations are for no policy change at this meeting, but verbiage will be closely monitored for hints regarding the rate path in the remainder of 2024. Market Trends:   Wall Street bounced but pared its early rally. It continued to shrug off the evolving Fed outlook and instead re-focused on tech enthusiasm. A Bloomberg report that Apple is in talks to build Google’s Gemini AI engine into the iPhone boosted risk appetite. The NASDAQ (US100) advanced 0.82%, after halving early gains. The S&P500 (US500) was up 0.63% and the Dow was 0.20% higher. Nikkei (JPN225) was choppy after the decision but closed 0.66% higher, while Japanese government bond yields fell. Financial Markets Performance:   The USDIndex firmed and held over the 103 mark. It rose to 103.45. The USDJPY lifted to 150.47, with the Yen paring recent gains, despite the hike, as Ueda made clear that the inflation target has not been reached yet. As interest rate differentials between Japan and the United States remain stark, Yen is likely to remain under pressure. Antipodeans: AUD and NZD slid to 2-week lows, i.e. 0.6515 and 0.6050 respectively. Gold eased to $2,153.95 and USOIL steadied at $82. Bitcoin drifted for a 4th day in a row, currently at $64,500, slightly above 20-DMA. Always trade with strict risk management.
