Computer froze, lost $2800

Recommended Posts

No thanks done the trading room too many times and look at it just another distraction. Fine for others I know.

My question was related to your above answer to get a better broker when the discussion centered on ecbot going down. Globex has not been immune to such problems either although not to the same extent as ecbot.

An equity account to use ETF's would be the same situation as having additional funds in a futures account to hedge YM/ES.

Whatever the backup plan, one is needed.

As stated above, the OP's question was about HIS PERSONAL COMPUTER going down. Check post #1 in case that's not clear.

As for Globex going down, that's another story and one in which I also addressed for MC.

So, yes, I do trade futures full-time and know what I am talking about. The question then is - do you trade futures full-time? What's your backup plan Sun since you didn't like my response? Very quick to criticize, yet nothing offered as a better solution...

Well you seem to be selective in your reading therefore your judgment in me being critical. I started my reading of this thread at post#1.

As far as how long I have been trading Full-Time, before there were such a thing as trading forums (mid '90's).

And again - if my suggestions were that poor, what would YOU suggest? You conveniently left that part out of your post. I'd love to see what other ideas you have since mine were so poor.

Ahh those where the days. You missed out on a couple of places to hang! Silicon investor had a day trade section I seem to recall, and of course there was The Motley Fool that had a section 'The Devils Den (daytrading)'. Actually that summed up the sentiment about daytrading round then :) We where all 'devils'. Of course the majority of these forums where about investing. How things change.

Cheers.

Actually I did hang at SI Silicon Investor which is real ghost town now. I think they started about '96 but I didn't come across them till late '97 (?)

Yeah had some good stuff at SI I remember Vladym Griefer posted a lot of great stuff and a few others that escape me now. The Motley Fool (TMF) I think was a few years before that but can't remember when they added the Devils Den. Met some good 'cyber buddies' at TMF and even met a couple in real life who where trading at a London prop shop.

Certainly understand where you are coming from with chat. I blow hot and cold on that. There are a whole bunch of pluses but of course it can be a bit distracting, really that's a personal discipline thing I guess. The room here is pretty laid back and quite fun worth a try.

Anyway rather drifted off topic but I think the computer freezing has been done and dusted anyway.

Cheers.

I think the easiest way to prevent this if your friend is adverse to changing brokers is to upgrade the computer. It is a far cheaper alternative than to have another mistake such as this happen.

How much software is your friend running? What are their computer specs? Research this and figure out what is best for you.

My personal recommendations is a dedicated machine for trading and a laptop I don't think would cut it. Remove all "fun" software such as media players, bloatware, games, and strip it of all but the necessary programs that the operating system would run. Regarding the operating system, I would also recommend Windows XP Professional. Vista is not yet integrated with all peripherals and if they have any trading software downloaded there is no guarantee that it will work with Vista. In addition, Vista requires a massive amount of RAM to run.

Processor speed should be in excess of 2.5GB. RAM should be above 2GB. I would also recommend a dual DVI flat screen setup to run multiple charts with easy visibility.

note: I represent no computer company, work for no computer company, and am only a computer geek working his way into the markets.

A laptop can work just fine, mine has 17" with vista ultimate, 2gb ram, dual core intel processing, DEDICATED video ram (this is crucial, cheaper computers share your system ram and rape your performance).

DVI or vga will make NO difference for charting, maybe if you run games or watch TV on the computer.

Also Vista is supported very well mainstream now, all in all the major brokers support it and IMO Tradestation works better for me under Vista than it does on XP pro. I do agree that extra software should be avoided, though I'm guilty of running a ton in the background while trading and it really dosen't impact my trades.

Just my 2 cents as a tech geek that builds systems and works in the industry till I can break through on the market.

I'm thinking of DVI for streaming TV and market news. I'm just thinking quality. Certainly no games though. ;)

I'm a tech geek too and would rather build my own desktop than laptop.

    • Question: To those that had/have cancer, what were the signs that made you think “something is not right here” to make you go see a doctor? Answer: So, 5/25/2018, I woke up, got ready for work, and as I walked to my car, I started gagging. Like something was stuck in my throat and I needed to clear it. And then it went away.   But 10 minutes after that, I was T-boned at 40mph on the driver side door. But what made me see a doctor was while my muscles felt better and bruises were going away, the gagging still continued, I started having fevers, my neck felt swollen, I was having such a hard time breathing, and I'd have random sharp pains in my chest, but not from where the seat belt saved me.   2 weeks after the accident, I finally see an urgent care doctor, who looks me over, tells me I'm fine, but luckily requests a neck X-ray. And I ask for a chest X-ray, which he rolls his eyes but let me have (most of my pain was in the neck, so I understand).   The very next day, he calls and says “So, that chest X-ray shows there's a 4 inch mass on your heart and lungs, and your lungs have been filling up with fluid, as well as in your pericardial (heart) wall. We need you to come in tomorrow.”   Turns out the big mass, due to the accident, caused my heart and lungs to tear and fill with fluid, the swollen neck and gagging was caused by 2 metastasized tumors, and the fevers and weight loss were symptoms. Stage 4b Hodgkin's Lymphoma.   But thankfully, we went very aggressive with chemo (and had a lot of bad side effects that don't normally happen to patients), and now I'm about 16 months cancer-free. Yay lucky X-rays! • As a man, the reality of life is the harshest part. I don’t mind looking older or becoming weaker over time; it’s nature.   Have you ever heard that the only people who will be loved unconditionally are women and children? Men will only be loved as long as they can provide until they are no longer needed. It doesn’t matter if you already did your best to get your kids to the best school or get the best things for them, if you stop before they’re done with it, there will be no thank you. The only thing they will remember is that they have to quit school at 15, ignoring all the previous 15 years of life you provided for them. The only people who will accept you, no matter what, are your parents. But in this situation, you might be that ungrateful child.   EDIT: Wow, I didn’t think this would get so much attention.   For those who disagree, I can only say that everyone has their problem. If you don’t get the chance to face such a thing, be grateful. Remember, sometimes what you throw in the garbage is something that someone wishes ever to have.” – ElZee, Quora   Profits from free accurate cryptos signals: https://www.predictmag.com/
