My first deposit was ~8000 USD with tradestation but quickly closed that and moved to Interactive Brokers because their Forex offering 9 years ago was pathetic and their customer service was useless. They didn't even offer Eurex data back then. IB had it all and was cheaper.

Happy new years,

MK

$8K. Which I blew up in 3 weeks. My second deposit of $8K lasted a bit longer. 4 months.

I guess the third time's the charm.

As a side note. I didn't realize it at the time but I guess I was always pissed at my first broker, FXCM. About 2 years later I decided to get even with them. Every month they have a "King of The Mini" contest. Minimum acct size to enter was $500. First prize was $25K.

I opened an acct with the required $500. I had a 104% gain that month and didn't even finish in the top 10. Oh well.

About £500 into an IG Index spreadbetting account. It took me about 1 month to lose it. Then I topped it up with the same and lost that more slowly. Then I opened a real futures brokerage account with Infinity and started using TradeStation for charting and managed to tread water daytrading.

Then a futures account with TS with a single market strategy that took me on a 12 month rollercoaster ride, eventually cashing in the account to use as a deposit on a property (mostly the equity, not the profit, you should understand).

And then 12 months of research but no trading, during which time I asked to be considered for moderator status on TL, and felt like complete imposter when I admitted I wasn't actually trading . . . and then finally an IB account trading ETFs from last July, which seem to offer my small account the desired combination of reduced leverage and massive diversification.

Opening account size is all relative. Most new traders should, in my opinion, look for something greatly de-leveraged, where they can test their ideas without losing huge sums.
