Stress Makes You Stupid

Studies have been done that show the neural networks in a stressed out monkey have fewer branches than in a less stressed monkey. So stress can make you stupid. Oh, and it makes you fat too.

But does trading stress make traders stupid and fat? Hmmm? That would be an interesting study. I'd think it would be difficult to be stupid and be a successful trader.

On the other hand, I think "stupid" is a relative thing. Just because one can not trade does not make them stupid and if one can trade successfully, they might still be considered stupid in some circles.

I remember associating with a guy a whiile back who, from all I could tell, (but does one ever really know?), was a successful trader, but, but his use of the English language and some of his reasoning's, you would assume he was stupid.

I have been continually amazed in my near 50 years on this planet, (a very short time indeed), that everybody has something to learn from everybody. Time and time again, I come to think I am smarter than some person and they turn out to surprise me in some way.

I'm sure there are people who make a living trading, that, if I were to sit and have a conversation with, I would consider stupid. And I'm sure there are people who could never be successful traders that I would consider to be very smart.

I think everybody, stupid or not, has their area of expertise, weather it be an auto mechanic, plumber doctor, or "artist" or trader or whatever... If we can become a successful trader, does that make us smarter than someone else who can fix a leaky faucet efficiently?

...after reading this, I see that I am way off topic from the original post, but after a couple beers i figure, what the heck, I'll post it anyway...

No, I don't think you are way off topic. Actually, you bring up some very interesting points about the personalities of traders. If everyone here in cyberspace at TL met at a convention in person, I'm sure we would have a very different understanding of each other.

I think that how a trader deals with stress, and their personality would be very interesting. In many ways, a "regular job" is a lot more stress than taking some draw down, or having to cut your losses. It's just a different kind of stress.

But does trading stress make traders stupid and fat? Hmmm? That would be an interesting study. I'd think it would be difficult to be stupid and be a successful trader.

Stress, as understood in neuro-biology, is actually a physiological state indicating biological arousal or being keyed up for action. Stress is further broken down into two kinds. Distress and eustress. The difference between the two is the mind set that interacts with the physiological state. In distress the uncertainty of a situation is engaged with negative appraisal of the future (read fear of loss). This is called anxiety, or in trading it is called worry or fear. In eustress the uncertainty of the future is meet with a positive appraisal of a potentail outcome.

Adding one more distinction about stress as applied to trading. The level of arousal necessary for optimum performance is based on the level of physical or cognitive functioning needed for peak performance. In sports such as American football, where the requirements of peak performance are very physical, high levels of eustress are needed to produce optimum performance. Whereas in such pursuits as bridge, chess, and trading, where their is little need for physical performance, low levels of arousal are needed for cognitive peak performance. The problem is that the high levels of adrenaline and cortisol are not conducive to calm, impartial thinking so needed for evaluation of ambiguity (effective trading mindset)

Hope that helps.

No, I've never had a weight problem. I don't gain weight. My brain may be atrophying though. When I imagine what a trader looks like, I don't imagine someone who has gained a lot of weight. Even though it's a sedentary type of work, I don't picture traders as being overweight. I picture traders as people who want something more out of life, and may want to take good care of themselves. I picture traders as people with higher standards somehow, and striving for something other than average.

So that image I have of the typical trader, and the effects of stress don't seem to be totally in sync. I guess that is part of what is interesting to me.

Yes,i'm joking about it ,some people said that if you gain weight can depends from the activity of brain IF .You are a trader so you live your state of being trader like you are.if you are a people that take cure about you,and love to see you ever in good mould ,you'll have a

kind of lifestyle, you make sport, don't eat fat foods and don't cooking with fat.Lovely your description, that you imagine traders people that want some more out of life.maybe you are so ,maybe you don't think like become many rich ,but maybe you are more interesting at the consequence ant the effect that trading can product.I like observe ad exemple in this time some effect that trading has on sex and on the pairs sex activity.I talk so because i can observe that in many period of year sex are less importance if you don't take in consideration like a good lifestyle.Trading some time can killed sex activity in the people. My personal opinion how i live so.

I think that being a successful trader, at least for a man, would make him have a better image of himself. A man's self worth can be tied to his ability to provide for a wife and family. And that ability to provide, can be tied to his self-worth, and the self-worth can be linked to interest in sex.

This is out of my "comfort zone", and I'm pushing my limits here. I think we are venturing from PG, to R rating now.

I think many are missing an important aspect of stress; particularly if one is under capitalized and trading. It is almost a self fullfilling prophecy that such a one is going to fail. Why? Because of increased stress, which makes one do stupid things while trading, and those stupid things one does while being stressed quickly deplete your trading account. How many accounts have you blown by being stupid because you were trading with too little capital? Obviously, I am not saying you are stupid; only that you or I do stupid things while being stressed. It is extemely difficult to not be stressed while in a trade if you have little money to trade with, and if stressed your chances of success fall exponentially. Sure it is easy to suggest, "Well, you shouldn't be trading in the first place." But, some are not as fortunate as others. I am sure there are many out there struggling to make it with too little going for them. To those I would suggest making sure you achieve discipline and patience and taking the time to work on those two aspects before trading with real money. Stress can kill you in more ways than I can count.:)

Stress is certainly bad for perceiving ability. Food and lifestyle can effect levels of stress.

Drinking, junk food and porn all increase stress.

Learning new sports or arts, adventure sports, yoga, a vacation in peace & solitude can help reduce stress.

Stress does make you "stupid" in a sense as it impairs your brain function.

This is why we need a trading plan and to follow it. When we are in a trade our stress levels go up and we are able to make progressively worse decisions.

Our brains suffer an amygdala hijack and we are not able to process new information, the same happens when we are angry and have a difficult time thinking of words.

Amygdala hijack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Goleman is an expert on this subject, a good read. This is very applicable to trader's and their decision making abilities.

the best way to handle stress is by getting into the stock market well-prepared for what it will hurl your way. You need the right education, experience, tools and mindset for this. When we are mentally prepared for a trading day we are less likely to experience stress. Similar to the surgeon, you have to know what you will do in case the market goes against you. You have to know how you will handle yourselves throughout your trading day.

Perfectly put. I wouldn't consider a person who was unprepared for a bad turn of events in trade a good trader. Trade won't always be good and if a trader can't handle that fact, they may as well quit business. Cheers

    • Be careful who you blame.   I can tell you one thing for sure.   Effective traders don’t blame others when things start to go wrong.   You can hang onto your tendency to play the victim, or the martyr… but if you want to achieve in trading, you have to be prepared to take responsibility.   People assign reasons to outcomes, whether based on internal or external factors.   When traders face losses, it's common for them to blame bad luck, poor advice, or other external factors, rather than reflecting on their own personal attributes like arrogance, fear, or greed.   This is a challenging lesson to grasp in your trading journey, but one that holds immense value.   This is called attribution theory. Taking responsibility for your actions is the key to improving your trading skills. Pause and ask yourself - What role did I play in my financial decisions?   After all, you were the one who listened to that source, and decided to act on that trade based on the rumour. Attributing results solely to external circumstances is what is known as having an ‘external locus of control’.   It's a concept coined by psychologist Julian Rotter in 1954. A trader with an external locus of control might say, "I made a profit because the markets are currently favourable."   Instead, strive to develop an "internal locus of control" and take ownership of your actions.   Assume that all trading results are within your realm of responsibility and actively seek ways to improve your own behaviour.   This is the fastest route to enhancing your trading abilities. A trader with an internal locus of control might proudly state, "My equity curve is rising because I am a disciplined trader who faithfully follows my trading plan." • SELF IMPROVEMENT.   The whole self-help industry began when Dale Carnegie published How to Win Friends and Influence People in 1936. Then came other classics like Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins toward the end of the century.   Today, teaching people how to improve themselves is a business. A pure ruthless business where some people sell utter bullshit.   There are broke Instagrammers and YouTubers with literally no solid background teaching men how to be attractive to women, how to begin a start-up, how to become successful — most of these guys speaking nothing more than hollow motivational words and cliche stuff. They waste your time. Some of these people who present themselves as hugely successful also give talks and write books.   There are so many books on financial advice, self-improvement, love, etc and some people actually try to read them. They are a waste of time, mostly.   When you start reading a dozen books on finance you realize that they all say the same stuff.   You are not going to live forever in the learning phase. Don't procrastinate by reading bull-shit or the same good knowledge in 10 books. What we ought to do is choose wisely.   Yes. A good book can change your life, given you do what it asks you to do.   All the books I have named up to now are worthy of reading. Tim Ferriss, Simon Sinek, Robert Greene — these guys are worthy of reading. These guys teach what others don't. Their books are unique and actually, come from relevant and successful people.   When Richard Branson writes a book about entrepreneurship, go read it. Every line in that book is said by one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time.   When a Chinese millionaire( he claims to be) Youtuber who releases a video titled “Why reading books keeps you broke” and a year later another one “My recommendation of books for grand success” you should be wise to tell him to jump from Victoria Falls.   These self-improvement gurus sell you delusions.   They say they have those little tricks that only they know that if you use, everything in your life will be perfect. Those little tricks. We are just “making of a to-do-list before sleeping” away from becoming the next Bill Gates.   There are no little tricks.   There is no success-mantra.   Self-improvement is a trap for 99% of the people. You can't do that unless you are very, very strong.   If you are looking for easy ways, you will only keep wasting your time forgetting that your time on this planet is limited, as alive humans that is.   Also, I feel that people who claim to read like a book a day or promote it are idiots. You retain nothing. When you do read a good book, you read slow, sometimes a whole paragraph, again and again, dwelling on it, trying to internalize its knowledge. You try to understand. You think. It takes time.   It's better to read a good book 10 times than 1000 stupid ones.   So be choosy. Read from the guys who actually know something, not some wannabe ‘influencers’.   Edit: Think And Grow Rich was written as a result of a project assigned to Napoleon Hill by Andrew Carnegie(the 2nd richest man in recent history). He was asked to study the most successful people on the planet and document which characteristics made them great. He did extensive work in studying hundreds of the most successful people of that time. The result was that little book.   Nowadays some people just study Instagram algorithms and think of themselves as a Dale Carnegie or Anthony Robbins.
