Can I Sell Options on Day of Expiry?

Recommended Posts

I have some SPY calls. How late can I sell them? Can I sell them on the day of expiry? The day before? They expire Feb 19.

Yes, I know they will have no value. For the 10 people that answer 10 questions I did not ask I understand there is no value left in them at the end.

Yes, you may sell options on the day of expiry. If the option 'is in the money', why not; if it is not in the money and will not cost you more to sell it than to just let it expire, some money back is better than none.

A better strategy is to place a stop order based on how much (%) you are willing to lose. This way, you can minimise your losses. Another 'option' is to sell an option 3 or more strike prices above the strike price that you purchased if it was a CALL you bought OR sell a PUT option if the underlying equity drops below a certain price but your analysis suggests that it may not close below that price.

In either case, if the trade does not perform as planned, it is not a 100% loss. You need decide before placing the trade where you want to exit the trade –be it to take your profits or to exit if the trade goes against your plan. The amount should be the same for every trade since you are a beginner (5%, 10%, 20%, etc.). Keep in mind that some equities can have as much as $10 -$15 swings or more in a very short period of time so set your stops accordingly. I trust that this is helpful to you.

I guess binary options trading can be another good option for trading options, as you only have to predicts the value of underlying assets. It does not involves hassling of making stop losses and take profit, simple call or put options with a specific time frame called expiry. It also allows ladder trading and early closure is also available in some contracts.

Conversely, a put option gives the owner the right to sell the underlying security at the option exercise price. ... Selling a Call - You have an obligation to deliver the security at a predetermined price to the option buyer. Buying a Put - You have the right to sell a security at a predetermined price.

    • Question: To those that had/have cancer, what were the signs that made you think “something is not right here” to make you go see a doctor? Answer: So, 5/25/2018, I woke up, got ready for work, and as I walked to my car, I started gagging. Like something was stuck in my throat and I needed to clear it. And then it went away.   But 10 minutes after that, I was T-boned at 40mph on the driver side door. But what made me see a doctor was while my muscles felt better and bruises were going away, the gagging still continued, I started having fevers, my neck felt swollen, I was having such a hard time breathing, and I'd have random sharp pains in my chest, but not from where the seat belt saved me.   2 weeks after the accident, I finally see an urgent care doctor, who looks me over, tells me I'm fine, but luckily requests a neck X-ray. And I ask for a chest X-ray, which he rolls his eyes but let me have (most of my pain was in the neck, so I understand).   The very next day, he calls and says “So, that chest X-ray shows there's a 4 inch mass on your heart and lungs, and your lungs have been filling up with fluid, as well as in your pericardial (heart) wall. We need you to come in tomorrow.”   Turns out the big mass, due to the accident, caused my heart and lungs to tear and fill with fluid, the swollen neck and gagging was caused by 2 metastasized tumors, and the fevers and weight loss were symptoms. Stage 4b Hodgkin's Lymphoma.   But thankfully, we went very aggressive with chemo (and had a lot of bad side effects that don't normally happen to patients), and now I'm about 16 months cancer-free. Yay lucky X-rays!
