Other liquid mini contracts?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there's other mini futs that have any sort of liquidity. MIni ags seem to trade like less than 100 a day, mini gold is...ehhhh....mini EuroFX is garbage...

Are there any other minis to trade? The reason I ask is because I love the small dollar tick increment right now for my purposes, but have really only 4 things to choose from (3 really...the ER2 is a bit rich for my blood).

Any thoughts?

Chris

I trade mini crude (QM) which is very liquid. Are you sure you're looking at the right month for mini gold? The most liquid month is usually the one ahead of the current contract. August is where the liquidity is right now. There are plenty of contracts that don't have the "mini" prefix but are of similar value if you take into account the per tick value and average true range. Try the 10 year note (ZN) for the ultimate in liquidity or British Pound Futures for very similar liquidity, tick value and ATR to YM.

Define "mini".

The so-called "mini-Ags" are garbage - that is, a waste of your time.

The regular Ags (aka Grains) at the CBOT - corn, wheat and soybeans - have the SAME tick value as the ES, plus an equivalent or even greater daily range, of late.

Again, you have to define what you mean by "mini". ;)

Except soybean meals, which has the same tick value and movement as ER2. Good alternative to ER2 imo.

Who said anything about soybean MEAL or OIL? Not enough volume far as I'm concerned. YMMV.

Of course it's not enough compared to other index futures emini. But it's enough if you're not trading more than 10 lots at a time. Scaling in and out is best strategy.

Something that has an equivalent value to the YM per tick would be "mini" to me. :)

That's only $5 a tick.

And you're looking to trade volume, or spin your wheels?

Are you daytrading it, or holding for swing or position trades?

Just multiply the tick value by the ATR and you have a contract with similar risk/reward characteristics. For YM at the moment it's $650, which is about the same as the full-sized ags, British Pound futures and treasury futures.

Do you have a paper account with IB? Just pull up all the big ECBOT and GLOBEX contracts and randomly buy and sell stuff to see what your typical winnings/losses will be. I recommend GBP futures, ZN, QM and ZC.
