INSIGHTS INTO THE MINDSET OF SUPER TRADERS – Part 7

“I appreciate the opportunity to manage money for others. A lot of people don’t enjoy it, but I do.” – Mike Melissinos

Name: Sam Zell

Date of Birth: September 27, 1941

Nationality: American

Occupation: Business magnate, investor and philanthropist

Career

Sam’s parents were Jewish immigrants who left Poland to settle in the States before the outbreak of the World War II. Sam was born in Chicago and he attended Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois. He obtained a BA from the University of Michigan and later, he obtained a JD (Juris Doctor) from the University of Michigan Law School.

In 1967, Sam founded Equity Group Investments. Bob Lurie Robert H. Lurie joined him and they worked together to transform the firm into a vast business empire. Lurie died in 1990, but the business continues to grow and grow and grow. One source confirms that the majority of Sam Zell’s investment portfolio ranges across industries such as energy, logistics, communications and transportation, but he is often best known for his pioneering role and stewardship in creating the modern commercial real estate industry. Moreover, EGI’s holdings also include fixed-income investments in public and private companies.

Sam is involved in various international and local causes, donating generously to them, including education. He’s blessed with 3 children.

As of January 2015, Sam was worth about $4,900,000,000.

Insights:

1. Good traders and investors are able to tackle the uncertainties in the markets, solving the problems of the unpredictable nature of the markets in simple ways. That’s the secret of our ongoing success. We make complex problems (that put off people from the markets) look simple. We simplify these problems and come with simple solutions. That’s exactly what Sam has been doing in decades – unraveling the mystery of various markets and amassing huge wealth by doing so.

2. There’s one though-provoking quote on Egizell.com, which says: “Solid business strategy is not anchored in suit, or a tie. It comes from the gut. Corporate culture can’t be dictated. It comes from the soul. A great company comes from the heart.” How true is it!

3. The qualities of a good trader aren’t measured by her/his attitude when things are right, when things are fine, and during winning streaks; but when the road is rough, tough and during losing streaks.

Conclusion: Winning strategies are the ones that go contrary to the expectation of the public, and that’s why it takes serious discipline to follow such strategies. We want to follow good strategies when they work and when they don’t work.

This article is concluded by a quote from Sam:

“The reality is that I need to be challenged and interested, as long as the risk and reward is in line.”

You are absoultely right. I am a new trader every time when I looks at the market. I think probably it's because of the focus. If we focus on the right thing(tried to understand the inherent (hidden?) wisdom of market), then we probably would have less distraction, immagination and speculation from this complex system. Cheers.

    • Question: To those that had/have cancer, what were the signs that made you think “something is not right here” to make you go see a doctor? Answer: So, 5/25/2018, I woke up, got ready for work, and as I walked to my car, I started gagging. Like something was stuck in my throat and I needed to clear it. And then it went away.   But 10 minutes after that, I was T-boned at 40mph on the driver side door. But what made me see a doctor was while my muscles felt better and bruises were going away, the gagging still continued, I started having fevers, my neck felt swollen, I was having such a hard time breathing, and I'd have random sharp pains in my chest, but not from where the seat belt saved me.   2 weeks after the accident, I finally see an urgent care doctor, who looks me over, tells me I'm fine, but luckily requests a neck X-ray. And I ask for a chest X-ray, which he rolls his eyes but let me have (most of my pain was in the neck, so I understand).   The very next day, he calls and says “So, that chest X-ray shows there's a 4 inch mass on your heart and lungs, and your lungs have been filling up with fluid, as well as in your pericardial (heart) wall. We need you to come in tomorrow.”   Turns out the big mass, due to the accident, caused my heart and lungs to tear and fill with fluid, the swollen neck and gagging was caused by 2 metastasized tumors, and the fevers and weight loss were symptoms. Stage 4b Hodgkin's Lymphoma.   But thankfully, we went very aggressive with chemo (and had a lot of bad side effects that don't normally happen to patients), and now I'm about 16 months cancer-free. Yay lucky X-rays! • As a man, the reality of life is the harshest part. I don’t mind looking older or becoming weaker over time; it’s nature.   Have you ever heard that the only people who will be loved unconditionally are women and children? Men will only be loved as long as they can provide until they are no longer needed. It doesn’t matter if you already did your best to get your kids to the best school or get the best things for them, if you stop before they’re done with it, there will be no thank you. The only thing they will remember is that they have to quit school at 15, ignoring all the previous 15 years of life you provided for them. The only people who will accept you, no matter what, are your parents. But in this situation, you might be that ungrateful child.   EDIT: Wow, I didn’t think this would get so much attention.   For those who disagree, I can only say that everyone has their problem. If you don’t get the chance to face such a thing, be grateful. Remember, sometimes what you throw in the garbage is something that someone wishes ever to have.” – ElZee, Quora   Profits from free accurate cryptos signals: https://www.predictmag.com/
