This survey is an inappropriate solicitation. I was spammed with an email notification of it's existence because I automate strategies and chose to subscribe to the Automated Trading subsection of this forum. Here's how I score our moderator's choice to leave this topic up.+ Eyeballs viewing this spam contribute to revenue while spam remains.

Hi onesmith,
This is a community and everyone is entitled to their opinions and preferences. And there might be some people who would like to help a student out and take his survey. No harm done is there? If you don't want to take the survey just ignore the thread.

Heres my setup. Hi im new to the community.wow that is pretty impressive!!

So getting back to my original question, what would the actual sell short order look like when you place it? For example, if the bid is 20, would I place a sell limit order just ABOVE the bid at 20.05 and wait to see if I get filled on the way up before the stock reverses?
Yes that is right.
And what if I'm pretty sure the stock is already falling and I want in right away? That's where I get confused - do I simply place a sell MARKET order?
Generally its not a good idea to place Market orders simply because there is a small chance it shoots quickly out of the range you want. But in practice, if its a very liquid stock you should be ok.
what risks I might be taking? Thanks - I'll get it eventually......
The biggest risk with shorting is your loss can be 'infinite'. Since you are shorting, a stock can go up 10x and thus you are on the hook for 10x the position. If you were just long a stock, the most you can lose is your original position.

Interesting article about 24hr trading ...
Round-the-clock stock trading, once considered a natural and inevitable next step in an increasingly technology-driven, global market, is now widely seen by U.S. traders and exchanges as undesirable and unnecessary. The reasons range from the practical — pallid investor demand that’s kept liquidity low — to the parochial. Stocks remain a local market for investors.
The difference between stocks and commodities is that there are people all over the world wanting to buy wheat. [but] not everyone around the world wants to buy Chuck E. Cheese stock. At some level, it’s that simple,” said Ian Domowitz, managing director at Investment Technology Group, an independent agency research broker

This makes it easier thank-you. It seems like this is the only option strategy that I have at my disposal since I was approved for a level 2 option trading with sharebuilder. I may have to switch to TD Ameritrade since it has more to offer. You might also want to look at selling naked puts ... this guy has some interesting trades each month.

Are you after yield or capital gains?
If its yield then I would go for the big steady telecoms like Verizon, AT&T, China Mobile, Bell (in Canada). If its capital gains, you can't really go wrong with Apple and Google.
Personally, I stay away from commodity component manufacturers as they live and die by the whims of their masters, namely the product innovators. But I have to admit these are the guys most likely to be a 5 bagger.

scary, isn't it.the scariest thought -- the domino is falling one by one, and USA is somewhere in the line !!!
Yup ... the only thing 'good' about the US is that Europe is worse! Funny but the flight to safety from the Europe is straight to US treasuries ... but eventually hopefully it will be to gold and silver.

Hi,
No, the contract would be exercised at the strike price of $55. So you would have 100x$55=$5500 + $200 premium for a total of $5700

It's important to be able to control one specific instance of something, so there needs to be a way to label and refer to that specific instance.Yup that is essentially Object Oriented Programming ... the Objects are the individual instances of a Class. You never really 'control' all the instances of a Class (Human) just the individual instances of the class (Mark)

One lesson that this teaches is that activism is necessary if you want to have a voice in government or within a company whose shares you own..If you want to be heard, you have to vote and/or you have to participate in the process. Quite a few folks do nothing and then complain about the results when it is too late.I am guessing that no one really monitored what Corzine was doing, or they might have raised questions about it long before this event. What does that say about the board of directors?.... about shareholders and bondholders alike?
Have to agree with you 100% here Steve. Like I say to my employees - "if you don't have input don't complain later". BOD definitely has a responsibility to the shareholders to keep a watch on whats going on. But on the other hand. the CEO also has a responsibility to work in the best interest of the company as a whole - not just what is good for him. Lots of blame to go around here ... but it does look like someone is going to jail.

Value investing is all about the asset itself.Active trading is about direct forces of supply/demand which are effective in short-term.
They are complimentary to each other, why compare them at all.
Not really comparing them, just wanted to see if people do both or are they strictly in one camp

- value investing is still all about price and the right price. The problem with most people trying to value invest is time and skill to find value, time to sit and wait for the value to be revealed. Then the same principles apply for trading......you dont take every value trade, only the high probability ones.Yes I agree the biggest problem with Value investing is having the discipline to wait and wait for the value to be revealed. In fact, this is one of the reasons why I like options trading vs. buying stocks as it forces a timeline on the trade for me.

You may not like it, shareholders may not agree with all his decisions....even those among the board of directors may not agree or like his actions....if that were the case, they should have ACTED to curtail his activities...by voting him out....Very true. I guess this is just identifying an even bigger problem with public corporate structures and responsibilities. But that is a topic for another thread ...

We have learned a lot this year at TL, through both trading and discussing ideas with other traders. I’m proud to end the year by highlighting some really great threads where we reflect on the mistakes we have made this year, as well as some of the trading strategies and techniques developed by the community members. Print them up and enjoy them by the fire with some hot cocoa by the fire this Christmas while the markets are quiet.
