  1. From the Inside Flap Every day, millions of ordinary people around the world wake up, turn on their computers, and try to make a living by trading the financial markets. Some are successful, some fail, but the possibility of hitting it big attracts many to the business. As currency strategists and traders, authors Kathy Lien and Boris Schlossberg have been active in the markets for more than a decade, meeting many successful individual traders along the way. In Millionaire Traders, Lien and Schlossberg interview twelve ordinary individuals who have transformed themselves into extraordinary traders. These people aren't hedge fund managers or employees of large money center banks with billions at their disposal, but regular folks who started with as little as $1,000 and turned those modest initial investments into six- to seven-figure fortunes. The traders you'll encounter come from all walks of life, live around the world, and trade a variety of electronic markets. Some focus on equities and options, while others deal in futures or foreign exchange. Each has a very different style of trading—many that are even in direct conflict with each other—but all share the common traits of discipline, persistence, and the willingness to always cut losses. Some of the individuals who share their experiences in the art of trading include: Dana "Dan" Allen: the man who buys crashes and thrives on making bids when most other market participants are running for the exits Chuck Hayes: who breaks many of the sacrosanct rules of trading yet thrives in the chaotic world of e-mini stock index futures, where the difference between fortune and failure can be measured in seconds Indi Jones (this is an alias): who trades options for volatility as well as directionality, using sentiment and psychology to select his winning contrarian ideas Roland Campbell: who likes to trade news flow, but only the news that catches the market off guard While none of the traders highlighted throughout this book were successful from the start, all learned from their early failures and used those experiences to improve performance. Now, with Millionaire Traders, they'll show you how to make serious money in today's financial markets—whether it be through stocks, futures, or forex.
  2. From the Inside Flap Fifteen years since publishing Mind over Markets—their seminal work on markets and investor behavior—Dalton, Jones, and Dalton have greatly expanded their scope, delving deeply into the ways in which the auction process reveals the actions of all investor time frames. They believe that by understanding timeframe behavior through developing market structure, it is possible to identify asymmetric opportunities that can ameliorate risk and help ensure financial dominance. This book is a bold call to action for all investors—from day traders through the longest-term individual investors, to traditional asset managers and hedge funds that control trillions of dollars. It challenges serious traders, investors, and researchers to reach beyond price-based market analysis and traditional fundamental research for a more contextual approach . . . an approach that translates the principles of behavioral finance into actionable reality by examining the relationship between price, time, and volume. The authors take a profoundly different approach toward the traditional separation between day, short-, intermediate-, and long-term investors, pointing out that even the longest-term professional investor is a day trader on the day they enter, exit, trim, or add to a position. Lead author Jim Dalton and coauthor Eric Jones—having been heavily involved in selecting hedge funds and traditional managers for a leading Wall Street financial services firm—can attest to the importance of each basis point of performance in a world where one quarter's results can trigger financial triumph or a quick exodus. In May of 2006, two months before the book was to be delivered to the publisher, the U.S. stock market broke eight percent in a matter of days—sending investors and the media into a tailspin. The authors saw this as an opportunity to demonstrate their theories in real-time, as opposed to cherry-picking historical events that supported their claims. The event unfolds in Chapter 6 and the authors offer sound advice and strategies on how to navigate market activity yet to unfold. The results are summarized in the Appendix, which was written after the book was submitted to the publisher. You be the judge. Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, Markets in Profile teaches you the market's basic auction process, redefines how to view and conduct research, separates the markets into different time frames, illustrates the importance of inventory imbalances, and, in sum, demystifies market behavior by showing you how to organize the market's auction process in a scientific, systematic way.
  3. Product Description from Amazon The True Life Story and Time-Tested Strategies of the World’s Greatest Trader "Excellent read! Captures the spirit and times of Jesse Livermore, legendary trader. The book tracks two major market crashes, love affairs, the shooting of Jesse Jr. by his mother, and two family suicides. . . . Never a dull moment." –Ace Greenberg, Chairman, Bear Stearns "Terrific. I started reading it when we took off from Seoul’s Kimbo Airport on my way to Germany. By the time we reached Novosibirsk, Russia . . . I had finished it. I just couldn’t put it down! Not only is it a great lesson in investing and trading, it’s a fascinating psychological study of what makes a great speculator tick. The rise and fall of a great speculator as well as the rise and fall of his family is great reading. The fact that it is based on interviews with Livermore’s survivors and witnesses to the events makes it even more interesting. Great writing."–Mark Mobius, Managing Director, Templeton Asset Management "As one of the most shrewd traders of all time, Jesse Livermore demonstrated how important discipline is when trading the market. Smitten . . . covers how Livermore created his rules . . . also reviews the lessons Livermore learned along the way to develop his strategies."–William J. O’Neil, Publisher, Investor’s Business Daily "A stock market classic! Most entertaining and informative book on the market that I have had the privilege to read in the last twenty years. A must-read for students of the stock market–great even for those who have no knowledge of the market. Grabs you from the start and holds you enthralled from cover to cover. Great book!"–Dan Sullivan, Publisher, The Chartist, Fund Manager, and Investment Advisor "After reading Smitten’s magnificent biography, two Japanese proverbs came to mind: ‘Fortune favors the bold’ and ‘Darkness lies one inch ahead.’ Smitten shows how fortune and darkness were integral parts of Livermore’s life . . . has the intrigue of a mystery novel and the lessons of a trading master. What more can one ask for? I eagerly recommend this book to anyone interested in history, the markets, and trading psychology."–Steve Nison, author of Japanese Candlestick Charting
  4. Product Description from Amazon Maximizing the trader’s state of mind is the key to successful results. Conflicts, contradictions and paradoxes in thinking can spell disaster for even a highly motivated, astute and well grounded trader. Mark Douglas, a trader, personal trading coach, and industry consultant since 1982, sends the message that "thinking strategy" will profoundly influence a trader’s success rate. Douglas addresses five very specific issues to give traders the insight and understanding about themselves that will make them consistent winners in the market. Trading In The Zone offers specific solutions to the “people factor” of commodity price movement. It uncovers the true culprit for lack of consistency when it comes to stock picking: lack of focus and self-confidence. Through simple exercises, traders will learn how to think in terms of probabilities, and adopt the specific beliefs necessary to developing a winner’s mindset. Along the way, they’ll gain valuable insights into their own entrenched misconceptions about the market. Backed by compelling examples, Trading In The Zone adds a new dimension to getting an edge on the market. Through a better understanding of themselves, as well as of Wall Street’s realities, traders will come to leverage the power of their psyche for unprecedented profitability.

  9. In the midst of the most serious financial upheaval since the Great Depression, legendary financier George Soros explores the origins of the crisis and its implications for the future. Soros, whose breadth of experience in financial markets is unrivaled, places the current crisis in the context of decades of study of how individuals and institutions handle the boom and bust cycles that now dominate global economic activity. “This is the worst financial crisis since the 1930s,” writes Soros in characterizing the scale of financial distress spreading across Wall Street and other financial centers around the world. In a concise essay that combines practical insight with philosophical depth, Soros makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the great credit crisis and its implications for our nation and the world.
  10. From the Back Cover Praise for THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS "Jack Schwager simply writes the best books about trading I've ever read. These interviews always give me a lot to think about. If you like learning about traders and trading, you'll find that reading this book is time well spent." —Richard Dennis, President, The Dennis Trading Group, Inc. "Jack Schwager's deep knowledge of the markets and his extensive network of personal contacts throughout the industry have set him apart as the definitive market chronicler of our age." —Ed Seykota "Very interesting indeed!" —John Train, author of The Money Masters "Successful trading demands longtime experience because it requires firsthand knowledge. If there is a shortcut to this requirement, however, it is in reading about the experiences of others. Jack Schwager's book provides that shortcut. If you find yourself sweating upon occasion as you read, then you're as close to the trading experience as you can get without actually doing it yourself." —Robert R. Prechter, Jr., editor, The Elliott Wave Theorist THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS Some traders distinguish themselves from the herd. These supertraders make millions of dollars—sometimes in hours—and consistently outperform their peers. As he did in his acclaimed national bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews a host of these supertraders, spectacular winners whose success occurs across a spectrum of financial markets. These traders use different methods, but they all share an edge. How do they do it? What separates them from the others? What can they teach the average trader or investor? In The New Market Wizards, these wildly successful traders relate the financial strategies that have rocketed them to success, as well as the embarrassing losses that have proven them all too human. Meet the Wizards of Wall Street: Stan Druckenmiller, who, as manager of the Soros Quantum Fund, realized an average annual return of more than 38 percent on assets ranging between $2.0 and $3.5 billion William Eckhardt, a mathematician who, in collaboration with trader Richard Dennis, selected and trained the now-legendary circle known as the Turtles Bill Lipschutz, a former architect who, for eight years, was Salomon Brothers' largest and most successful currency trader Blair Hull, a one-time blackjack player who began an options trading company Asking the questions that readers with an interest in the financial markets would love to pose to the financial superstars, and filled with candid appraisals, The New Market Wizards takes its place as a classic. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
  11. A veteran Wall Streeter, Mamis argued for technical (as opposed to fundamental) analysis of stock prices in When to Sell (1977) and How to Buy (1982). In the charmingly existential text at hand, however, he goes well beyond his demandingly interpretive discipline to reflect on larger issues. To achieve success in either life or the market, Mamis points out, individuals must act before they know enough, meaning there are hazards involved. He observes, for instance, that investors who hesitate may catch only the last 20% of a bull move and thus assume a disproportionate share of risk. Among other problems, the author notes, those under pressure (i.e., at risk) often let emotion determine their responses. Since experience instills concern as well as confidence, he says, many people (having been coerced into socially acceptable behavior patterns since childhood) become paralyzed at critical junctures in their personal and financial lives. Taking as a given the premise that ``the market climbs a wall of worry,'' Mamis advises readers to trust their intuition (not instincts) whether trading equities, falling in love, or engaging in other more or less gainful pursuits. Incurring informed risks, he asserts, can prove a liberating proposition whose reward is not necessarily a payoff, but a balance. By this, Mamis means the satisfaction that accrues from playing a game (or role) to win, rather than not to lose, from start to finish. In addition to an abundance of Zen-like pronouncements (e.g., ``death is the extreme of risk''; ``like sex, money distorts our senses''), he offers a full measure of contrarian counsel on a wealth of subjects--from gold (a commodity Mamis cites as an impotent hedge during recent market breaks) through indexing (an investment approach that reduces responsibility without curbing risk) and diversification (a system ``designed to protect the dumb''). Thought-provoking perspectives on the market and life as tests that never end

  13. In business and government, major money is spent on prediction. Uselessly, according to Taleb, who administers a severe thrashing to MBA- and Nobel Prize-credentialed experts who make their living from economic forecasting. A financial trader and current rebel with a cause, Taleb is mathematically oriented and alludes to statistical concepts that underlie models of prediction, while his expressive energy is expended on roller-coaster passages, bordering on gleeful diatribes, on why experts are wrong. They neglect Taleb's metaphor of "the black swan," whose discovery invalidated the theory that all swans are white. Taleb rides this manifestation of the unpredicted event into a range of phenomena, such as why a book becomes a best-seller or how an entrepreneur becomes a billionaire, taking pit stops with philosophers who have addressed the meaning of the unexpected and confounding. Taleb projects a strong presence here that will tempt outside-the-box thinkers into giving him a look.

  15. From the Inside Flap Trading is an intensely personal and subjective endeavor—one that is more an art than a science. And like all forms of art, the results are clearly visible, but the struggles of the artist involved are rarely ever seen. Over the course of his career, author Jason Alan Jankovsky has experienced both the best and the worst that trading has to offer, and now, in The Art of the Trade, he puts this discipline in perspective by taking you on a personal journey that reveals the harsh dynamics of this world. The Art of the Trade is a searing portrait of the futures and options industry as seen through the eyes of someone who has participated in this arena for more than twenty years. On one level, it's a brutally honest, no-punches-pulled look at the individuals and institutions that comprise this unique community. Page by page, Jankovsky deftly describes the pseudo-professional brokerage offices that spring up like weeds in Chicago's financial district, only to suddenly disappear months later, and lays bare an industry where drug use, financial irresponsibility, and personal vendettas are commonplace—and where the customer is often the victim. On another level, The Art of the Trade is a personal story of the challenges faced by Jankovsky as he battles the markets, the brokerage industry, and his own early penchant for self-destruction. With each chapter, Jankovsky takes you through his journey of self-discovery and discusses what it takes to succeed on your own terms. He skillfully shares his hard-won experiences—from realizing that markets have a reality all their own to unlearning things we might consider essential to trading success—and shows you how these insights can put you in a better position to make it as a true trader. Both entertaining and informative, The Art of the Trade will help you come to grips with the realities of trading today's markets and deal with the constant state of adversity that is so much a part of them. With the lessons found throughout this book, you'll be prepared to survive and thrive in an environment that is far from stable.

  19. Evidence-Based Technical Analysis: Applying the Scientific Method and Statistical Inference to Trading Signals From the Inside Flap As an approach to research, technical analysis has suffered because it is a "discipline" practiced without discipline. In order for technical analysis to deliver useful knowledge that can be applied to trading, it must evolve into a rigorous observational science. Over the past two decades, numerous articles in respected academic journals have approached technical analysis in a scientifically rigorous and intellectually honest manner, and now, Evidence-Based Technical Analysis looks to continue down this path. Organized into two parts, this valuable resource first establishes the methodological, philosophical, and statistical foundations of evidenced-based technical analysis (EBTA), and then demonstrates this approach—by using twenty-five years of historical data to test 6,400 binary buy/sell rules on the S&P 500. Evidence-Based Technical Analysis examines how you can apply the scientific method, and recently developed statistical tests, to determine the true effectiveness of technical trading signals. Throughout these pages, expert David Aronson details this new type of technical analysis that—unlike traditional technical analysis—is restricted to objective rules, whose historical profitability can be quantified and scrutinized. Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, Evidence-Based Technical Analysis provides you with comprehensive coverage of this new methodology, which is specifically designed for evaluating the performance of rules/signals that are discovered by data mining. Experimental results presented in the book will show you that data mining—a process in which many rules are back-tested and the best performing rules are selected—is an effective procedure for discovering useful rules/signals. However, since the historical performance of the rules/signals discovered by data mining are upwardly biased, new statistical tests are required to make reasonable inferences about future profitability. Two such tests, one of which has never been discussed anywhere heretofore, are described and illustrated. If you want to use technical analysis to navigate today's markets, you must first abandon the subjective, interpretive methods traditionally associated with this discipline, and embrace an approach that is scientifically and statistically valid. Grounded in objective observation and statistical inference, EBTA is the approach to technical analysis you need to succeed in your trading endeavors.

  21. Trading Rules that Work: The 28 Lessons Every Trader Must Master From the Inside Flap As traders, virtually all of us develop a set of rules that govern our trading activities. Yet, all too often—for a variety of reasons—many of us selectively ignore or change those rules.Ê Author Jason Alan Jankovsky has been a trader and market analyst for over twenty years. During this time the markets have taught him many things, but the most valuable lesson learned was the importance of following a set of trading rules that work for your style of trading, risk tolerance, and emotional make-up. Now, in Trading Rules that Work, Jankovsky wants to share his findings with you. This comprehensive guide provides a blueprint for trading success by introducing you to 28 essential rules that can be shaped to fit any trading approach—whether you're dealing in stocks, commodities, or currencies. Straightforward and accessible, Trading Rules that Work outlines the deeper psychology behind each of these accepted trading rules and provides you with a better understanding of how to make those rules work for you. The rules, which are more accurately defined as flexible guidelines, fall under four parts within the book: Part One: Getting in the Game outlines the psychology of market price action, what that can mean as far as your trade selection is concerned, and how to begin from the point of a strong market presence Part Two: Cutting Losses shows you how to protect yourself in today's markets—even when it is emotionally difficult to do so—by developing a set of personal trading rules uniquely designed to your trading style Part Three: Letting Profits Run covers the few simple rules you should follow in order to remain in a winning trade until market potential has run out Part Four: Trader Maxims examines the most common rules, and how they have both nega-tive and positive psychological implications Trading successfully takes discipline, desire, knowledge, and skill. By combining the various rules, insights, and guidelines found through-out this book, you'll be in the best position possible to achieve consistent success—no matter what markets you choose to trade.
