Multi Monitor Laptop: Your Experience

Recommended Posts

hi everybody,

my ideal trading setup has been so far a desktop with four screens and I am now curious about using a laptop instead.

Can anybody share his/her experience trading with a laptop and multiple screens and what hardware layout you chose ?

Has anybody had any experience with the layouts described on BannRonn.com (see: "Dual or Multi-Monitor Laptop for Stock Trading" in the site) ?

thank you

This helped me a lot when I was looking for a new trading computer. I learned to stay away from the mass manufacturers who use low grade components and I see that the BannRonn talks a lot about Dell computers. I hope you find this useful:

Hi,

With most laptops, at best you'll be able to connect to 2 external monitors (if you have a DVI-out and the correct video card) but most likely you'll only be able to connect to one external monitor with a VGA. Your 4 monitor setup seems perfect, why do you want to goto a laptop? Instead, I would suggest putting all your files online (dropbox, etc) and use the the desktop as your primary but have a laptop available when you want to trade\research\etc from your backyard or in front of your couch!

hi MMS,

I am wondering about making the switch for two reasons:

a) I wish to spend more time out of town and I find it more practical to have one main machine and two sets of monitors rather than 2 mon-sets + 2 desktops.

b) I have the impression laptops are evolving faster than desktops so better get used to the former not to "lose out" in the future.

I may be wrong, of course

thank u for ur comment

best

Hi,

Well one thing you can do it buy a laptop and 2 docking stations. Those will allow you to have

at least 2 monitors each. But your laptop will have to be a good one (ie. expensive) so that it has a good video card. I'm not sure if the 4 monitor video cards are available in laptops.

thx

Though its probably too soon to say for sure... and I know most of us require Windows, but Macs can run Windows...

I'm wondering what will be possible with Intels/Apples Thunderbolt connection. I think in theory you're suppose to be able to daisy chain multiple displays, peripherals, hard drives, etc. With the iMac you can already hook two iMacs together and switch between the two machines running OSs with each machine using the others display for dual-displays. Atleast thats how I understand it works.

But the real question is, will all this work for Windows 7 without hitch. I like Apples latest hardware, but who knows what my choice will be when the time comes.

Just throwing this out there.

You are right about the mass manufacturers. Also, I do would take into consideration customer support and warranty. I have heard good things about EZ Trading Computers.

I have a lap top and I also want to have 3 monitors. Im gonna go with the Kensington Universal Multi-Display Adapter. High rating on Amazon by a lot of people and its cheaper that getting a expensive computer. Worth a try.:)

This guy used his laptop to power these 3 monitors:

The latest Mac Airbook laptops have an inbuilt capability to run several monitors and "up to 6 external devices."

I run windows on an iMac 24, but only for MT4 charting (going to Parallels desktop software soon to integrate these with the Mac goodies). The latest email contained news of the above laptop/multi-monitor ability, but sadly I have deleted it now.

The upshot is that this capability now comes as standard, and I think it might be possible to run even more monitors from just one laptop.

Cheers

Ingot

EDIT: This is in line with what Mr_You is saying in post #11 above.

The issue would be the cost - do you want to spend that much?

"Those adapters work well but you have to remember that laptops have been optimized for minaturization, not power and speed...their processors tend to be slower..
