Chat Room Updates

Due to the numerous requests of timeouts in the chat room, I have upgraded the database integrated with the script. Timeout issues should improve although there are no guarantees as chat rooms and forums integrated create quite a burden on the server. Any feedbacks are welcome. Thanks!

Are there some 'general recommendations' which could help prevent timeouts or lock-ups?

For example: use Firefox, compatibility issue with some firewalls, etc...

None that I am aware off. I dont think it will make a difference which browser you use but do recommend Firefox over IE. With firewalls, I really have no idea . I cant see how it would affect it if the firewall allows access to traderslaboratory.com to begin with. Thanks.

According to the developer:

"The timeout is a network issue and not related to the chat. if you keep your mouse over the tiny icon [bottom, left] you'll see PHP/SQL execution: 0.001 sec - that's the chat on your server and Latency: 0.050s - that's the network. internet is not the perfect network environment. when your browser requests something from internet it goes through many hosts and finally it appears on your screen. it is possible any of these hosts to slow down and even drop your request. it is normally to happen from time to time since internet is not perfect so that the closer the server is, the better."

The odd thing is, when I have a lock-up in the chatroom, I can't access the site at that time. It gives a time out message. Twenty seconds later, everything is just fine again. I'm using Firefox 3.

Please let me know if you experience this problem again. I am shopping around for another chat room script which I may implement after hearing some additional feedback. I dont want to jump to conclusions yet as a new script may just lead to similar issues. Thanks.

Is IRC an option? IRC is built for uptime, verses HTTP. HTTP was never intended for "live" content like this.

It would be as easy as making a room (possibly on a financial IRC network like Othernet), and for those who like it web-based, use a Java client for it (which you can get free).

The main difference in our chat room is the ability for users to upload charts directly into the chat room window. From my understanding IRC chat clients do not provide this option?

Correct. You could "get around" this by having an "upload image" link right above the chat, which allows them to upload an image, and gives them a URL to paste into the window, which is clickable.

IRC would also enable those who don't like web-based chat (or don't want to keep a browser open) to use it. Moderation and user control is also easier.

Hmm... Im not familiar with IRC at all so will need to look into it. This will require additional coding to implement an upload bar... preferably in ajax or something so pages dont reload. If there is enough request for it, I will try to get it done. I really dont see any issue with the current chat room... were you getting timed out yesterday?
