New CME Equities Hours and Limits

Recommended Posts

Okay so from 19th Nov 2012 a few things are changing in the e-minis. The official end of the trading day and start of the new to the day will be 5:15pm & 6:00pm ET as opposed to current 4:15pm & 4:30pm ET. It may have some sort of bearing on options by the looks of things. Interestingly, the lower price limits will 5% going forward and the S&P will be the basis of the market wide circuit breaker rather than the Dow. This means +/- 5% from P ("The equity index futures RTH reference price (“P”) used as the mid‐point to establish daily

equity index futures price limits will be based on a Volume Weighted Average Price (“VWAP”)

determined between 2:59:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. rather than on the 3:15 p.m. futures

settlement price.") is the first level. This equates to 72.5 pts in the ES if P = 1450.

Anyway, not sure if it will make a big difference to intraday trading although I'll look at it properly later on. The limits would make a difference on a big day and we might need to adjust session times.

Just a reminder that this is happening from this Sunday. As far as I can tell, it shouldn't really affect day traders who close all their positions by 4:15pm EST. The only difference is that from 4-4:15pm the limits (circuit breakers basically) for both day and globex trade will be in force. The 5:30-6:00pm EST window is also extended to 5:15-6:00pm EST.
