Open ECry has a very nice paper trading platform if you are interested in futures.

I have been using Open ECry's demo for about 5 months or so now day in and day out and I really like it for my style of trading. You can use OEC's demo for $25/month which includes their charting and data feed. Very good deal for a beginning trader and there are lots of question and answer threads here in the OEC section of the forum which has really helped me when I couldn't figure something out. They just put out a new version of their platform last week which has some nice upgrades.

It is hard trying to figure out what to use when you are a beginner because there are a million different opinions out there about each platform. For me, I just wanted to get started on the real work of trading at a low cost while I wasn't earning any income from trading and OEC fit the bill. Good luck.

I just realized I should have given more details of what I need from this platform of paper trading.

1. I am only interested in stocks.

2. I'd like it to have the possibility to place stop and limit orders.

3. Ideally, it should be as close to reality as possible. If I place an order and the market is closed, it shouldn't get filled.

4. I don't expect any charting capabilities, nor advice. It would be nice to give me some 20 min delayed data; it would help me with my entries and exits, but, if not possible, i could do without.

5. It should be free to use.

You can set up a paper trading account, though I think you need a real account first, but that just needs 2500 usd or something to start, then you can trade anything in the paper account. There are live charts there too, but not real great ones.

Have you looked at think or swim. It has a paper trading account. You don't have to pay a cent. Just open a regular account. If you have no interest in continuing just cancel your account and get all of your money back. They have stock , options & future all in one. They also have weekly chat on wed and friday.

I have been using thinkorswim for the past six months and love it. The best thing is that they have a daily 'Market Cast'; where a profession trader walks you through the market real time for FREE. They also have another guy lcalling out trades from the Futures pit live. Sounds like he's calling a horse race all day long.

Turtrades is not a broker software. But it does let you paper trade and practice your trades using real historical market data. You can trade in the past and advance to next day or several day to see how you did. It is kind of like paper trading without waiting several days to see the results.
