Large Block Trades at the Bell

Recommended Posts

I have never really understood how a trade of this size

http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gm592300.jpg

can go through in one block. I sometimes have trouble selling 10k shares

Not to mention this was AT the closing bell, and I mean the bell had finished ringing on CNBC before it showed up so you know it printed RIGHT at the bell.

Does this kind of trade require that both buyer and seller know each other and just agree to print it at the close fo the day or something?

Many exchanges have a mechanism to negotiate large trades outside the auction process (off exchange). These are reported however as single blocks on the tape. maybe it's that?

You should find papers on the exchanges website or your broker should know (or be able to find out).

If you're asking which specific participants are involved in these transactions, there would be no way of knowing unless you were at the place where the deal took place, physically.
