Want to Learn to Read Bonds

I'm wanting to learn about the bond market. Not to trade it but rather to gauge investor confidence mostly on an intraday basis but also on a longer swing-term basis. Which bonds should I be paying most attention to? How can I use them to measure inflation expectations? Fed rate change expectations? Or anything I'm missing.

Bonds are only the beginning of a larger goal. My main intent is to learn market correlations not only with bonds but also with other classes such as gold, the dollar, foreign and US equities and how they interrelate and how captial flows from one to the other.

Can someone refer me to some resources (preferably free and online but books work too) or just pour out your own knowledge if you'd like.

Thanks for all the help thus far!

Re: Want to Learn to Read Bonds

BG, If you want to learn about intermarket dynamics, the best source I know is John Murphy's nightly emails. He is the master of intermarket analysis, including bonds. It ain't cheap, but it's worth every penny---I've been subscribing for several years--wouldn't face the trading day without his wisdom. Hope this helps,
Taz

Re: Want to Learn to Read Bonds

Thanks for your response Taz. I'm trying my best not to add anymore recurring costs to my budget right now but I'll try it out for a few months to see if it helps me out enough to justify its cost. Anybody else have anymore, preferably free, resources?

BG,

Your options IMO are to pay to learn from a newsletter, book, etc. or do it yourself and see what you can figure out for 'free'. In some way, shape or form you will pay - either money or time.

Re: Want to Learn to Read Bonds

Here's another idea. Jack Broz is a bond trader. You might be able to get a free thirty days or so from him. Maybe only a week, I'm not sure, but he does have useful info.

Also, Tim Morge has many useful articles on bond trading. A word of caution, however--Tim is a MASTER trader, a true original genius, so you want to understand that the stuff he presents in his free lectures is only a part of the strategy he's using. Still, it's the same deal--useful information for free.

To get further info on Jack or Tim, put Google to work!
