Editing Your Profile

Once logged in, users are able to edit your profile. Editing will allow others to see background information about you such as years of trading, current trading platform, current broker, name, and other personal information. This is an optional feature and you can choose to show select information only.

To get started, refer to the profile button located in the top navigation bar:

Please refer to the following picture with labels 1-7 for the following description.

#1 Edit Profile - When clicking on this section, it will take you to your main profile page where you will be able to input your location, gender, date of birth, instant messager handle names, interest and hobbies, trading platform, broker, number of trading years, and a biography about yourself.

Users also have the option to display your profile public, private, or friends only.

Within the profile editing section, the sections labeled trading years, favorite market, broker, and trading platform will appear next to your username when posting a thread or reply. If you choose to leave this part blank, nothing will show.

You can also change your email and password in the edit profile page. Users also have the ability to include a snapvine user profile. Snapvine is an online free voice mailing system in which users can call your personal snapvine number to leave you a message. An example can be seen in my profile. In order to enable snapvine on the forums, you will first need to create a new account with snapvine and then simply include your own snapvine Profile ID in the edit profile section.

#2 Edit Options - This section allows users to edit forum related options such as receiving emails from admin, enabling and disabling private messaging, sorting threads, thread subscription modes, timezones, etc... This part is fairly self explanatory.

#3 Edit Signature - Editing signatures is available for premium members only. Signatures can consist of text and links. Any spam related signatures will be removed so please keep this area clean. Common signatures include personal information or favorite quotes.

#4 Edit Avatar - At Traders Laboratory, most of our avatars are custom made and not available anywhere else on the net. We encourage users to select an avatar of choice or their own custom avatar. Any offensive images will be taken down.

Avatars are seperated into different categories and themes. Users can also upload one directly from their PC or link to an external URL.

#5 Private Messages - This button will take you directly to your private message mailbox. Private messages are internal messages that members can send to other messages using our system. Think of it as an internal emailing system.

#6 Buddy List - This button takes you to the buddy list managing menu. You can simply add other members to your buddy list or ignore list. This is helpful if you want to keep your personal profile or blog private or to friends only. Placing a member on your ignore list will ignore all private messages sent by the member.

#7 Subscribed Threads - This will take you to the currently subscribed threads menu. You can remove subscription to threads in this menu. To learn more about thread subscription and adding specific threads to favorites, please visit this section.

Quick Links

Who's online - This lets you view the members online at the moment and the thread or posts they are currently viewing. You can also see country flags of members.

Upcoming Projects - This shows the current progress and updates of any upcoming features on Traders Laboratory. Some projects take much longer than others but you can track the progress of various fixes and improvements.

Posting a New Thread & Reply

Replying to a thread or creating a new thread is easy. There are two options when posting a comment. Quick Reply or Advanced.

Quick Reply - This is a lighter version of the advanced editor. It does not include functions such as attachments but is convenient for a simple reply as it is located directly at the end of each page.

Advanced Editor - The above picture shows the main reply box. Let's go over the boxes labeled from 1 to 10.

Box 1: This box simply changes the font to Bold, Italic, and Underline.
Box 2: This box changes the font, font size, and font color.
Box 3: This box aligns the text from left, center, and right.
Box 4: This button will insert your text in a numbered order. Here is an example:
  1. The following lines are lined up numerically.
  2. The following lines are lined up numerically.
  3. The following lines are lined up numerically.
This button will insert your text in an bulletin order. Here is an example.
  • Text is lined up and indented with a bulletin.
  • Text is lined up and indented with a bulletin.
  • Text is lined up and indented with a bulletin.
and are simple indent buttons. You can use it in the beginning of your line or paragraph.

Box 5: From left to right:

The smiley is the same feature as the smilies on the right hand side of the box.

button is an attachment button. If you want to post a chart or file use this button to upload and paste your files.

The two arrows: and are undo and redo buttons.

, , are used to wrap codes such as html and php. You can use it to wrap any other coding such as Easy Language. This is an example.

An example of text wrapped in a code
Box 6:

This box is used to insert links, email, and images. The first button: is used to insert a link. is used to remove a link from a text. is used to insert an email link. is used to insert image links directly on the post. And is used to quote another members post. Simple wrap the text you want to quote within .

Box 7:

This is a highlighting option. Here are some examples: yellow, orange, green, blue, and red.

Box 8:

Everyone is familiar with smilies

Box 9:

This option is directly linked to the image hosting feature. Members can directly upload and host images of our site. This is a short cut just in case you have an image you want to upload directly on your profile and account. Most ppl usually prefer to use attachments instead.

Box 10:

This box displays the icons inside your thread title. So if you post a happy thread you can use this: If you post an urgent thread you can use this:

Uploading Large Files

Let's say you want to share a large file such as a recording of your trading. Simply use the "Megaupload" feature underneath the reply box.

Files of less than 300mb can be uploaded using megaupload free of charge. This is a thirdy party file uploading site.

Uploading Vidoes and Images

Users can upload select format of vidoes and images directly on our server to use when posting a thread or reply.

Our attachment function allows the following format of vidoes to be uploaded: .mov, .mpg, and .swf. We highly recommend .swf as files can be condensed into smaller files. The picture below shows the format and maximum file size allowed.

To request additional format, please pm me.

Uploading Images - Images can be uploaded to our file uploading system located in the top navigation menu button.

My Smilies - This is a feature for premium members in which users can upload your own original smilies to use with your posts. Although we provide default smilies such as: , premium members can add additional smilies to use.

Thread Tools

Thread tools is one of the most handy tools available on the forum. Users can print a printable version of threads and replies as well as download a PDF version of it. (you must be logged in)

For example, a printable version of this thread will look like this. And a pdf version will look like this.

Searching within a thread - If you want to narrow your search and search only within a specific thread, you can use the thread search drop down menu located here:

An easy way to obtain the direct url of a specific reply is to use the permalink button. This will grab the url dedicated for a specific post. For example this permalink will take you to the third reply on this thread.

Stealing Attachment Links to Post Charts

The problem with attachments is that they appear at the end of the post. In order to implement charts within your post, you can simply copy the attachment image link directly. Here is how:

First upload the image using the attachment function.

Then right click on the attachment inside the menu box and go to > Copy Link Address (on Opera) or right click and go to Properties for Internet Explorer. (see pic below)

Finally, once you have taken the url use our image button here: and input the url into the menu box.

Please note that attachments are not viewable by unregistered members. So please make sure to login if you wish to view or download any attachments.
