Re: My First 10k Run
Yeah, I thought I would give it a shot today and ran for 1 mile. I got a knee brace which actually helped a lot. But now I seriously have a hard time walking. So I'm done running for a while. Could I start biking to help get my body in shape?
And after a run I stretch (obviously) for a long time and my muscles feel great. I then take a hot shower and then I have been icing my knees too. |

Re: My First 10k Run
Sounds good. There are a few hills around here that I know off the top of my head that I can bike on. The only problem is the amount of traffic, so I might be better off using one of the many trails around here.
I have a doctors appointment later this afternoon. I couldn't walk this morning and my knees are in constant pain, so my mom did what a mother does. I'm just glad I get all day to rest today. I have extra long ligaments in my legs, so I am more prone to injury. But I'm not really sure if this has anything to do with that? |

Re: My First 10k Run
Well, if you could walk before you picked up running again but can't after, I think that is a pretty clear cut problem.
Use trails. I've had 4 incidents with cars within the past 3 months and none were fun times and just last week programmed my lawyers phone number into my cell as I might need it fairly soon. If you do not know the cycling laws where you are and are uncomfortable with the amount of traffic, certainly stick to the trails. Besides, trails have all the hills whereas in comparison, roads are mostly flat. |

Re: My First 10k Run
Sorry to hear about your training problems. Doing some water aerobics may help:

Re: My First 10k Run
There aren't very many pools near me, but I would be up for it.
My injury is getting better. My left foot hurts like hell since it has to compensate for my limp. The bone around my knee cap hurts as well since I walk and my knee pushes inward. But I am taking 800mg of ibuprofen with every meal and resting a lot. I have a brace too and it seems to be helping. I'm hoping I will be ready to try a run by early next week. Tomorrow I will probably go for a nice walk on a trail I found. |

Re: My First 10k Run
Biking is a great strength enhancer for running and sprints will have a dramatic impact on your cardio capacity. However, improper form will exagerate knees problems. I switched from roadie to MB and then to MB racing (cross-country). MB has less knee related injuries because of the shifting angles and changing of pace from my experience.
I use an elyptical to push through injuries. Between the low impact and reversing ability (quad buster), it will allow you to maintain strength and cardio while allowing the knees to heal. Again, proper technique is critical. Do you have the right running shoes? I thought I did for years until I went to a running store and allowed them to recommend based on my mileage, style, and foot. Surpirisingly, the recommended shoe was a Mizuno and ended up cheaper than my stand-bys I have worn for years (Nike Air line). No ankle, back or knees flare ups and they have lasted longer (200 plus miles). This is not a plug for Mizuno, but the fact that I would have never entertained them without the full foot profile. Some things to consider. |
